VPN would have worked, however, there is no tap vpn adapter available for iOS unless you jailbreak. There are only tun adapters available.

If you're a Mac user who often uses VPN connections, you'll notice one very disappointing thing about connecting to your corporate or personal network over such tunneled connections: typically, Bonjour-style addresses (such as computer-name.local) don't work. This is because multicast DNS (or mDNS) doesn't work over a tunnel.
1.) Find a product that sets up a VPN configured to allow Bonjour and is compatible with the iPhone (Hamachi doesn't have iPhone support). 2.) Discover how to manually tweak a VPN to allow multicast Bonjour. I've searched pretty extensively for both items and have nothing. My router is a Linksys WRT54GL running Tomato 1.28
